CoNeMEsSA
Competence Network Mathematical Epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa
DAAD SDG partnership project 2024-2027
Project partners:
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana
University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kakamega County, Kenia
Moi University, Eldoret, Kenia
Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany
The project is funded by the DAAD (academic exchange service) and BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development), Germany, within the framework of SDG partnerships.
Background:
During the coronavirus pandemic at the latest, we have seen how many different disciplines need to work together so that the healthcare system in particular and society in general are able to make informed decisions to control the outbreak of an epidemic. The theoretical basis is formed by statistics, modeling, simulation and also by innovative methods as population genetics or artificial intelligence. A single university will find it difficult to adequately represent all aspects in research and teaching.
Activities:
In order to bundle and strengthen the expertise of the five universities, the competence network acts on three levels:
Internet-based lectures and student exchange at Master's level
doctoral student training
joint project workshops and research projects.
These activities strengthen the Sub-Saharan research region and provide the healthcare sector with internationally trained students.
South-South exchange:
A special feature of the project is the close exchange between universities from East and West Africa. The partner universities not only contribute to strengthening scientific exchange, but also create personal bonds between PIs, doctoral candidates and students.
